Rockin’ Roots Events brings handpicked blues, rock, roots and soul to one of the most characterful intimate venues in the Medway area, putting world-class artists within easy reach of Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester, Sittingbourne and across the county. If you’re searching for live music Medway has to offer at its very best, you’ve found the right place.
From Chicago blues legends to rising Americana stars, from British soul to Southern rock — if it’s got grit, groove and feeling, it’s on our stage. Rockin’ Roots Events has been bringing the best of the blues and roots world to Kent for years, and the Medway is where some of the biggest nights happen. We programme artists who have dedicated their lives to the music — guitarists, singers and bands who carry on a tradition that runs from the Mississippi Delta to the back streets of Memphis and beyond. These are not tribute acts or covers nights. Every artist we book is a touring professional with a serious back catalogue, a devoted following, and the kind of stage presence that fills a room. If you love real music played by real musicians, this is your home.
The Oast in Rainham is the kind of venue that serious music fans travel for. Great sound, great atmosphere, and a crowd that actually listens. When an artist plays The Oast, they remember it. The venue sits right next to Rainham station — one stop from Gillingham, and easily reached from Chatham, Rochester, Sittingbourne and Maidstone. Southeastern trains run direct from London Victoria and London Cannon Street, making it a straightforward night out from across the Medway and beyond. Parking is available at the rear of the venue. Once inside, the room is all about the music.
Every show on the Rockin’ Roots Events calendar is a handpicked artist — touring professionals with serious back catalogues and devoted followings. We don’t do tribute acts or generic covers nights. Every act we book is the real thing. Shows sell out regularly — we have a track record of sold-out nights across Kent with artists who pack venues far larger than this. The Medway has a real appetite for live music, and The Oast rewards that appetite with something genuinely special every time. When you see a date you like, don’t wait. The people who join our mailing list are always kept in the loop to get tickets first.
Kent has always been hop country, and oast houses are woven into the fabric of the county’s landscape — purpose-built for drying hops, their distinctive conical roofs a symbol of a rural industry that shaped this part of England for centuries. The Oast in Rainham carries that heritage in its bones, and its history runs deeper than most. Constructed in the early 1870s by the Wakeley Brothers, it has stood beside Rainham station for over 150 years — saved from sale in the 1970s and converted into a thriving community centre run entirely by volunteers. That story gives the place a character that no purpose-built venue can manufacture.
The Medway towns have their own deep musical roots. Gillingham, Rainham, Chatham, Rochester — this is a part of Kent that has always had an appetite for live music. A working crowd that knows a real performance when it sees one and turns up ready to be moved. Bring a world-class blues or roots artist into a room like The Oast and something special happens. The scale is right, the atmosphere is right, and the audience is right.
Inside, it’s everything an intimate live music room should be. Exposed brickwork, timber beams, low ceilings that hold the sound exactly where it needs to be. No screens between you and the stage, no corporate hospitality, no distance from the music. Just the artist, the room, and the people in it. To see world-class blues and roots performed in a space like this is something genuinely rare — and it’s why artists who play The Oast keep coming back.
